Thank you for taking the concerns certain people have about the Dutch celebration of Sinterklaas so seriously that you are heading a committee in the UN which has been set up to investigate this tradition.
It is understandable that the unfortunate coincidence that the soot covered face of a figure in a folk celebration shows similarities with caricatures of people of African origin is offensive to some, and I commend you for acting on their appeals for attention for their concerns. By doing that you are paying more attention to ordinary people than the government is to its own expert advisors.
I therefore hope you will also be attentive to the concerns I would like to share with you. Because the one thing that is even more frustrating than urgent life and death issues being ignored, is combining that complete indifference with great attention for a relatively minor problem, or even a non-issue. And compared to the horrors facing Dutch society today, I assure you, splitting hairs about one of the very few celebrations we have left is an extremely minor issue.
Never the less, I will answer your questions seriously.
The reason why there is a Sinterklaas and a Santa Claus is that the Sinterklaas celebration is fundamentally different from Christmas. In Holland, Christmas is a time for reflection. Sinterklaas is a time for fun and presents. On wikipedia you can find where it comes from. The reason Pete is black is from the soot in the chimneys he climbs down to bring children their presents, it is not his skin colour.
Personally I never paint our child black when he is dressed up as Zwarte Piet, but that has more to do with the dangerous chemicals in black paint available for that purpose, and with the stains it makes on the beautiful Zwarte Piet clothes. No one thinks he’s any less Zwarte Piet because of it. So it’s really not about that. The Zwarte Pieten on all the official parties and shows are fully trained acrobats, and invite reactions of awe and respect.
I hope that this information satisfies the committee’s curiosity and reassures them that Sinterklaas is not about racism, and that we can now talk about the real hardship facing the Netherlands today.
Democratic principles are being shaken at the core, and the victims of this are the most precious elements for the future of society today: children and families.
As you know, democracy needs to follow certain guidelines in order to prevent it from becoming a dictatorship or a tyranny of the majority. Many of these guidelines are laid down in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and in De Montesquieu’s “LEsprit des Lois.” While his work has outdated elements, there is nothing outdated about the separation and balance of powers.
These guidelines are not being followed in the Netherlands, and the disastrous consequences can be felt in every fibre of society.
To start with, there is no freedom of education in the Netherlands. Even international experts notice this. Schools are under strict government control and have no room to give children the best education possible. The very few schools that do have a chance to try and do something in the best interest of the children are under sharpened government surveillance, are mocked by the press, and often don’t make it. School attendance is mandatory, even if it is not beneficial for a child’s development.
If a child is not happy in school or if a school is unfit for a child, schools have no obligation what so ever to do anything about it, but parents are fined, brought to court and judged as criminals if they keep their children at home to protect them from bullying in school or in order to provide them with education better suited to their academic and social needs. So in spite of the known lifetime damage bullying causes, schools are not obligated to do anything about it, and parents are not allowed to protect their children.
The mandatory school attendance, which became a law in the Netherlands in 1969, makes it impossible for children to get the education they need in other ways.
In spite of expert advice based on research confirming the superiority of home schooling to school attendance, home schooling is virtually impossible in the Netherlands and there are plans to forbid it altogether. And also in spite of expert advice saying that young children need to be near the parents for the best brain development, the age that children are expected to go to day care keeps being lowered.
The government pretends that parents can start their own schools, but this is a lie. The list of rules they have to follow is endless, and even if schools manage to keep them all, they get shut down anyway, because in practice, it’s not the rules that are followed, but the random choices of the government officials handling the case. One school after the other gets shut down or marked as very weak even though, or maybe it would be more appropriate to say: because parents and children are happy with them, and their academic performance is fine. Also many schools in rural area’s get closed down because supposedly there are too few students to keep the school open. But then these children have no schools in the neighbourhood anymore. This causes many protests, but this has never had any results at all. The government is deaf to parents’ wishes and children’s needs.
The education rules are bad for children. Life determining choices about schooling are decided by the universally hated, expensive and commercially oriented Cito tests taken at the age of 11, much too young to be able to understand the consequences. And here again, there is no way to check if teachers are treating the children fairly. Instances are known of excellent test results not being added to the child’s record when the teachers do not want a certain child to be allowed in one of the better schools, because of racial or ethnic prejudice, economic considerations or for whatever reason. We will never find out, because there is no place where such atrocities can be reported.
Interestingly enough, schools especially designed for children of Euro Parliamentarians, in other words, the elite, do not have to follow these rules. If non-elite Dutch children are caught attending these schools, they are thrown out, and sometimes the school is closed altogether for this reason. In this way an underclass is being artificially created, by making proper schooling unavailable to the non-elite. Children who try to prepare themselves for the future they want with home schooling are criminally persecuted and forced to attend schools unfit for their career choices.
But it does not stop there. Such children and families are also often confronted with institutions called Bureau Jeugdzorg (Juvenile Care Department) and AMK (Algemeen Meldpunt Kinder Mishandeling or General Check point Child Molestation).
Any one but parents of children being abused in schools can file these claims, and the validity of the claims is not checked. Based on them children are removed from their parents, again without checking facts, and they are not allowed to come back home. Even court orders to bring children who have been mistakenly taken out of their parents’ homes are ignored. You could say this bureau Jeugdzorg robs children and holds them hostage. It is not unusual for children to be taken away from the parents on false grounds. If you take into consideration how sloppily the trials are done, this is no surprise. And this taking children away from the parents is not done subtly, which would also be unforgivable, but very rough. It’s heart breaking to see, and makes the conviction that many have that these out of home placements are not done for the childrens’ best interests at all very understandable.
A research committee of professors has investigated and confirmed claims of 60 years of child abuse of children under the care of bureau Jeugdzorg. All the government has done is apologise for these atrocities, but no other measures were taken and Bureau Jeugdzorg not only continues to have power in schools, this power is becoming increasingly unlimited, in every aspect. The highly qualified researchers of this Samson committee were furious, because their conclusions were overruled by the leader of the committee, who was much lower qualified than any of them. The interviewed child molestation victims are also furious, and are joining forces. Following the rule of thumb for Dutch educational policy: the worse people and institutions are, the more power they get, the better they do, the sooner they are closed down.
Since 1995, when pharmaceutical drugs were allowed to be prescribed for children by others than doctors, governments push schools to find ailments in children on the base of which parents are forced to put their children in care projects.
The parents are put under much pressure by schools to oblige, as the financial benefits for schools are huge if they are able to label children with disorders. The school gets around €5000, – per child per year for children without labels, and can get up to more than €20.000, – per child per year if a child does have labels.
40% of these costs are unspecified, and the grounds and execution of these care paths are unchecked.
These labels can lead to the government deciding that parents are unfit to have children. They call this “out of belly placement”. A child is then immediately taken away from the mother minutes after it has been born.
Lately no extra money is being given for labelled children, but schools get judged based on high their test scores are, and you can already guess, schools are now rejecting children who have, or from whom they expect problems, so that is the most recent problem. Of course these parents are then persecuted and fined again, even though they have no fault whatsoever in their children being without schools.
From 2014 onwards no signature will be needed anymore, and school boards even get to decide which child goes to which school.
Experts are not allowed to be heard in this decision making process and parents have no voice what so ever.
Undivided expert opinion and researches confirming the superior results and benefits home schooling children has, socially and intellectually, are also being ignored by those deciding on policies, and many schools who refuse to label children because they feel that the care they are put under is bad for them are being forbidden. The parents who let their children go to these forbidden schools anyways are criminally prosecuted, fined, and risk losing their children.
Much money is made by bureau Jeugdzorg by taking children away from the parents, and with almost 25.000 children placed outside of the home; the percentage of children taken away from the parents is the highest in the world.
Bureau Jeugdzorg makes €90.000, – per year per child placed outside of the home, and €38.000, – per child per year under sharpened surveillance. Parents say that their child has been seduced by the Juvenile Care Department to leave their homes. A similar financial advantage is linked to labelling children. Schools used to get around €5000, – per child per year for unlabelled children, which could become and more than €20.000, – a year per child for children with labels. Now schools are not getting more money for children which need extra attention, but are held accountable for absolute, not relative results, with chances of being shut down when the government deems them unsatisfactory. Pupils from which schools expect problems are being rejected by schools in large numbers And if a child has no school, by no fault of his or his parents, it is still the parents and the child who get persecuted, fined, and parents risk having the child taken away from them. The school has no responsibility whatsoever.
On the list of guest families where such children can be placed, rumours are there is a name of a certain recently retired high placed government official, of whom there are persistent rumours of pedophilia.
This was also the case before he got this very high position. But instead of these accusations being thoroughly investigated, news programs which discuss it have been taken off the air. Whole newsrooms are being fired. Papers who dare mention his name risk getting sued for insanely high amounts of money. Instead programs that can be seen as trying to influence the shape the public opinion towards acceptance of paedophilia as a sexual preference comparable to homosexuality instead as a form of criminal insanity are being aired regularly. I’m not the first to notice this, others have commented on this phenomenon.
There is a long list of tragic incidences costing the lives of those who try to have this man investigated, or people asked to act as witnesses in investigations against him.
International appeals have been made for his investigation, a US senator wanted to have the international court removed from The Hague because of him, but for a long time not one Dutch judge wanted to take the case, because they knew him personally and had often been appointed by him. Recently finally the court in Utrecht has allowed witness hearings against him.The Dutch government is paying large sums of money for his defence. He has constantly been honoured by them also at his retirement, at which six journalists were arrested. It is beyond any one’s understanding how he could ever have become appointed, with the lists of suspicions piled up against him.
I’m not saying on of these suspicions are true, but it seems like a huge lack of respect for people to let some one dealing with such accusations have such an important position without trying to explain anything openly to the public. Judges and certainly the highest judge should be above suspicion for people to feel safe. Where there is no justice, there can be no freedom, and that is exactly the problem in the Netherlands today.
The list of laws of democracy that are broken and the list of human rights that are violated goes on. The ones benefiting from treatments get to decide the necessity of treatments, a huge violation of the division and balance of powers necessary for democracy to be successful. The results are disastrous: besides the horrors that were already mentioned more than 16.500 children have no schooling, there is an alarming number of bullying in school related suicides, horrible circumstances in child care institutions and children disappearing from there, large numbers of teachers leaving schools, because they cannot stand being obligated by the government to treat children in ways they do not find to be in children’s best interest. (see appendix 1 at the bottom of this article).Bureau Jeugdzorg grasps any excuse to put children under sharpened surveillance. Ignoring laws of genetics and modern therapy, the head of Juvenile Child Care Department in Amsterdam thinks siblings of children who have any problems should preventively be put under sharpened surveillance. These lame excuses won’t even be necessary pretty soon. From 2015 onwards the plan is to assign a family coach to each family from the birth of the first child onwards. This coach gets to decide if a child is allowed to live at home or not. There is no guarantee that this decision is not determined more by the financial needs or physical lusts of the coaches, bureau Jeugdzorg or that of the guest families where the children are put when they are forcefully taken away from the parents than the child’s needs. It was proposed and rejected in Scotland because it was decided that this was a violation of fundamental human rights. But the worst ideas seem to have a chance in The Netherlands.
Holland is teeming with parent groups who are unhappy about the horrendous violations of human rights of children and families, but they are powerless to do anything about it, because there is no place they can complain and demand their and their children’s fundamental human rights to be respected.Petitions for home schooling, for stopping bureau Jeugdzorg, requests for money to help accused parents and children go into appeal against court rulings are constantly all over the social media in groups of bewildered parents filling pages with horror stories about the atrocities they go through in schools.
Large numbers of families flee the country to escape the systematic violation of fundamental human rights of children and families in the Netherlands by the government.
Ridded as they are of any journalists with any integrity, newspapers hardly pay attention to these facts, but instead they are filled with venomous insults towards the very few who do home school and schools who do put children’s interests first and who do respect parents’ wishes.
Ironically enough, it’s home schoolers are presented as idiots who believe in fairy tales. But who is the one believing in fairy tales, if anyone thinks that there is no real discrimination going on in Dutch schools? We are, after all, only decades away from a period when people with other belief systems than Catholics were barely considered human. And in ancient times, the Dutch were used to killing those who were found ugly.
How realistic is it to believe, that remnants of this very discriminating and judgemental way of thinking has not found tits way in Catholic teachers finding it fine, and even their religious obligation to give protestant and Jewish pupils a hard time? Or if the perverse financial rewards for labelling don’t ensure fault finding wherever teacher’s think they can get away with it, and even creating the situation that this is possible purposely isolating parents and pupils?
It is very simple for a teacher and for a principal to do. Just reward bullying certain children and even punish kindness toward them, and even the most popular child can be come a victim of bullying within days. It’s so easy for teachers to manipulate class room situations this way that the hardest thing for them and the principals who encourage them to do this is to not laugh their heads off at bewildered parents in their faces while these unfortunate parents of targeted children are leaping through hoops to make school a positive experience for children when the teachers and the principal know that they don’t have a chance in the world to save their children from the sadism of the school. Children can get A’s; the teachers will just leave the good grades out of the school records. When asked why, they can make up any excuse they like. They can encourage children to hit, scold, and even to mutilate other children. No one can do anything about it.
Even if this could be proved without a shadow of doubt, there would be no place to report this. The only possibility to report violations against fundamental rights of children in schools is at complaint committees which are ruled by the schools themselves. This is another breach of democratic principles. Needless to say not a single complaint committee will lift a finger to listen to the complaints of parents of bullied children, since the academic future of their own children depends on the school. Targeted children and their parents are avoided vigorously by the other parents and children, afraid as they are of the school’s punishments or of becoming the next target if they associate with the doomed families. A realistic fear, because punishment for associating with targeted families is not a chance, it is a certainty, and an irresponsible risk to take for any parent. So the targeted families become outcasts. And being an outcast is a reason for the Juvenile care Department to take them away from their parents. O, and if by some miracle, a complaint committee would respond to a complaint, and by an even bigger one rule that the parents are right, the school still has no obligation to follow that ruling.
There is no way to escape this doom, because children need to be introduced to next schools by previous schools, and they make sure that the children will never get a second chance anywhere.
Forcing mandatory school attendance in such unhealthy circumstances with no possibility or desire of protection of childrens’ and parent’s fundamental human rights is nothing short of sadistical .
To illustrate how irresponsible the Dutch mandatory schooling is, it is interesting to compare the situation in Dutch schools with the Stanford Prison experiment, done by Zimbardo. In this case it was a test situation done with a fairly homogenous group of people: upper class students, without the perverse payment for finding fault and hostage situation which exists in schools, and still the effects were so horrible the experiment had to be broken off prematurely.
In Dutch schools the same situation of absolute power of one group over another is created , only in this case the group with which this is done is everything but homogenous. To the watchful eye it is noticeable that in some schools it is only the Protestant and Jewish children with whom all sorts of faults are found, and who are forced in inferior schools, no matter how gifted and well behaved they are. Catholic children can terrorize teachers, classrooms, and won’t even get scolded. In fact, parents of bullies are often asked to be class mothers or school board members.
This I have seen from close by. It would be interesting to investigate the correlation between religious prejudices of teachers, principals and boards and the ethnic, economic and religious backgrounds of the children who were labelled in the past and who are now being refused at schools or put in inferior schools.[79a]
Parents have no rights to home school, or protect their children, and from 2014 onwards they don’t even have a say in which schools their children go to. Experts are not even allowed to influence this. Instead school boards (indeed, often times parent’s of school bullies) should estimate which children belong where. This does not leave the door wide open for discrimination, it ensures it. These are not experts deciding the child’s future, so ethnic, social , religious and economic background or preference are all they have to go by, and parents have no way of correcting any mistakes that are made, because then even taking expert opinions about individual children into account will not be allowed.
This not only predicts disaster, this is a disaster in itself. Whether the children will be subject to randomness or systematic discrimination, the lack of respect for children and families alike is atrocious.
Teachers who show the least bit of kindness to targeted families are immediately demoted. The teachers with a conscience flee government schools in large numbers.
So you see, these are the pressing matters that Holland desperately needs help with. The Secretary General of Education in the Netherlands does not seem cruel. Like the UN in this particular case, he is also fussing over details, like excellence in students, while I’m sure that if freedom of education and justice for families and children are restored in the Netherlands, the excellence he is looking for will show itsself also. Where there is no justice, there is no freedom, and peace and freedom are prerequisites for excellence.
If only Dutch families would be allowed to home school their children as is allowed in so many other countries in the world, they could escape the sadism of schools, the robbing of children of Bureau Jeugdzorg, or the Juvenile Care Department, which often uses violation of mandatory schooling laws as an excuse to place children outside the home, many problems would be solved.
If you can do something to protect the very few schools which are brave enough to put children and parents first, and the endless number of parent organisations set up to defend fundamental human rights of children and families in the Dutch educational system achieve that, you may do with Sinterklaas what you like, even though Zwarte Piet is treated with much more respect than families and children are. It can be done very easily by reversing the education law of 1969, something politicians and experts alike have been advocating for years. And maybe it will turn out that Sinterklaas is at the root of the atrocities in the Netherlands, because there children learn mockery is funny, that they are lied to by parents, and maybe this is at the root of the sorority and fraternity system where all government officials have been mangled as students.
But if you choose not to restore fundamental human rights and freedom of education in the Netherlands, please let the Dutch children keep Sinterklaas. It’s one of the purer things they still have. And unlike this fairytale, or the ones home schoolers are falsely accused of believing in, the lies the government acts on are extremely harmful and are destroying Dutch families. And to tell you the truth, nitpicking over Sinterklaas, which, has already totally taken the fun out of the celebration this year, topped off by the Piets not being fun and athletic . light personages, but stiff, armed and bullet proof vest wearing ones, is just more of the same pestering of families which has been going on for a long time in the Netherlands, from the sadism in schools which I have already talked about, to insane amounts of tickets for people who drive cars (even the police complain about this), to banks not giving out loans, to people being fired and then forced to do the same work for their unemployment money, and the list goes on, while real crimes like child molesting, murder, and theft tend to go unpunished, and certain criminal gangs are not even persecuted because of lack of police force. And do you seriously think it is reasonable to forbid Sinterklaas and permit the gay pride?
Just a question on the side: does this strange interest in such a relatively futile issue as the possible racist elements in Sinterklaas by any chance have anything to do with Rieke Samson’s position as racism expert in the Euro Parliament? She was, after all, the one who headed the investigation of the child molestation claims against bureau Jeugdzorg, and the one who thought it was OK to overrule the conclusions of the highly distinguished scholars in the committee. Your investigating these minor issues without breathing a word about the atrocities facing Dutch society today would be the icing on the cake of her attempt to sugar coat the large scale, violation of children’s and family’s fundamental human rights in the Netherlands
So please let fundamental human rights be respected and restore freedom of education in the Netherlands. I ‘m sure than the Netherlands will agree to paint Piet Blue in the future, as a tribute to the UN.

(Peter ter Riele’s echtgenote is orthopedagoge.)

These numbers were hidden by the government, and only became known thanks to the tireless efforts of Annelies Schillemans, mother of Hugo and Enrique Claassen, also known as “The Sailing brothers”, two brothers who were refused at every school because they had specific learning needs, and thus they were persecuted by the Bureau for Juvenile Care. These brothers saw no other option than to take to the sea, and talk to organisations around the world about the atrocities in the Dutch schooling system. Their organisation is called “Sailing for Education. http://www.sailingforeducation.com/ ´The school that finally accepted them is now also being attacked by the government.
